Our Under 16’s got Saturday past off to a brilliant start when they defeated Tir na nOg in the ACL Division II Final in the Morgan Athletic Grounds. When the sides previously meet in the league, they could not be split and a close encounter was expected. The large Nab support were not disappointed as the lads played to their capability and came away with the trophy.

Ryan Beagan got Ballymacnab off to a perfect start with a point coming straight from the throw in. Tir na Og answered well when they hit a point and a goal within a matter of minutes but Ballymacnab responded well and won a free and Aiden Toner split the posts.  The Nab then went on search of a goal of their own and when Conor Mackin busted through the Tir na Og defence he looked sure to rattle the back of the net but for a brilliant save from the goalkeeper. The chance of a goal came when Fergal Nugent was pulled down in the square. Aiden Toner stepped up to hit the net with a superb penalty.  Once more Aiden Toner got a chance from the dead ball and again he scored from close range. Tir na Og then got a point just before the half time whistle leaving the half time score 1-5 to 1-4 in favour of the Nab. Ballymacnab struck the net once again with just two minutes into the second half when Shaun Casey palmed the ball into the net. Kieran Hughes then put the Nab in front by 6 with a free kick. Five minutes later Ballymacnab scored a third and final goal, this one coming from Finnian Maguire. When Aiden Toner scored again from the dead ball Ballymacnab looked sure of victory when they went 9 points up. Tir na Og didn’t see it that way though and with a goal and a point they were right back in the game. Conor Leonard then got forward from midfield to put the ball over the crossbar. Again Tir na Og came back with a goal and a point but our lads held on to make sure they were not leaving empty handed. Final score was 3-9 to 3-06.An all round good team display with players like Conor Mackin, Aiden Toner, Ciaran Connelly and the inspirational Conor McGivern making sure of the victory. Captain Conor McGivern received the cup from County Board representative Malachy Heaney. Well done to the whole squad who have worked tirelessly all year and we also pass on congratulations to their management team of Gerard Gribben, John Grugan, Martin McGeown and Paul Connelly.
